bonanza!
![]() carl was happier (not much happier, but happier) in this compromise cowboy costume. (thanks for the good idea meme!) he declined to wear the boots or bandana but kept the hat and special bag from jess. he was a real trooper trick or treating with his dad, neighbor pal aj, and aj's daddy heath. trick or treat!

it's the great pumpkin, carl dahlberg
we had kind of talked about going down to the circleville pumpkin festival last weekend with our neighbors and their little boy, but circumstances kind of got in the way. val was determined, though, that we were going to do something fall-y, so she found a farmers' market over in hilliard that advertised itself with a hayride and a pumpkin patch. sounds great, we thought, so we invited pj and ronda and off we went.as it turned out, it wasn't exactly the dream fall-y spot we had kind of hoped (perhaps farms just outside of 270 aren't exactly the pastoral settings we were thinking of?) but the hayride was great -- it was an honest-to-god hayride in a wagon behind this creaking old john deere -- and the pumpkin patch was awesome. enormous. and we found a great one that's perfect for our jack o'lantern carving on friday night. anyway, here's some pictures from our trip to see the great pumpkin... 10.20.2005
this will be on the test
remember how, back when you were in school, you'd be listening to the teacher spend ridiculous amounts of time on some subject, some set of facts, and then some smartass would raise their hand and say, "is this going to be on the final?"
no? maybe that was just me. anyway. here are two names with which i think everyone should become familiar: iron & wine and calexico. although we have not discussed the latter in these pages before, the former should be familiar to dcentral readers from earlier this summer. the two bands' new ep, in the reins, which is pretty damned good, can be found here. but yes. iron & wine and calexico. this will be important later. speakeasy
here's a piece from speakeasy, an online magazine produced by ou journalism students, about this weekend's upcoming homecoming festivities.
now, i wonder where i've seen that picture before? :) (thanks, cara!) 10.17.2005

hackett to challenge dewine for senate
washington -- paul hackett, the iraq war veteran from cincinnati who was hailed by national democrats for his narrow loss this summer in a heavily republican house district, has quickly moved up in rank to challenge mike dewine for u.s. senate in 2006. [more] hackett, you will recall, is the guy who ran against republican jean schmidt in ohio's 2nd district earlier this year, after rob portman left congress to become us trade representative, and lost by only the narrowest of margins -- a result which, when coupled with the ongoing coingate festivities, has led many to conclude that the ohio gop is in serious trouble in the next election cycle. interesting. (sidenote: i think it's hilarious that paul hackett has a ridiculously detailed wikipedia entry.) no

hard-hearted harbinger of haggis
the washington monthly's amy sullivan on the miers nomination:
already i've received a robo-email from ken mehlman proclaiming her "extremely well-qualified" and declaring that "like justice o'connor", she "is a legal trailblazer." that is an insult to justice o'connor. even the washington post's morning piece on miers, which goes out of its way to make the most of her skimpy qualifications, can't avoid the fact that miers has done very little of note in the legal world and, "if confirmed, she would be a rare appointee with no experience as a judge at any level." pretty much sums it all up, doncha think? (for the record: i don't necessarily mind that miers has no judicial experience. i do find it somewhat less than comforting, however, that in a nation of more than 300 million people, the president feels that best candidate to succeed justice o'connor already works in the white house. and is from texas. and worked directly on his campaign. and was his personal lawyer. the bubble, it would seem, is still intact.) 10.02.2005
